Jimmy Shin grew up in a house where the shouting was loud, the expectations were higher, and the alcohol was¿ always in stock. Somewhere between dodging flying objects and working at his family’s convenience store (where he was wildly underqualified but fully employed at age twelve), Jimmy discovered two things: humor could save you-and alcohol was a close second.

What followed was a perfectly reasonable life path: raves, DJing, law school (for his dad), drugs (for himself), and eventually running a surprisingly successful drug operation while technically pursuing a legal career. It was going great-until the DEA showed up.

Laughing at the Abyss is a darkly funny, brutally honest story about addiction, identity, and what happens when your coping mechanisms start requiring their own coping mechanisms. It’s about hitting bottom, climbing out, and discovering that the thing you used to deflect-humor-might actually be the thing that saves your life.

About the Author

Jimmy Shin is a stand-up comedian, actor, and producer who has spent nearly two decades turning the chaos of life into punchlines. A graduate of the California Western School of Law, Jimmy decided to trade the courtroom for the comedy stage, a move that eventually led him to win “Rookie Comedian of the Year” at the Seattle International Comedy Competition.

He has released two acclaimed comedy specials: Wok of Shame on Amazon Prime and Wok This Way with Bill Burr’s All Things Comedy. When he isn’t touring internationally or performing for U.S. military personnel on USO tours, Jimmy produces and hosts The Shindig Show, a premier comedy series featuring top-tier talent at iconic venues like The Ice House, The Comedy Store and the Hollywood Improv.

A dedicated practitioner of daily meditation for over six years, Jimmy lives in Los Angeles with his cat, Sherman. Laughing at the Abyss is his latest exploration into the intersection of humor, resilience, and the absurdity of the human experience.
