THE INVENTION OF THE PICKLE

An Epic Adventure. A Terrible Idea. A Really Good Snack.

Before the pickle, civilization was a dark and terrible place.

The food was awful. The gods were horny. And King Gilgamesh, ruler of ancient Mesopotamia, was bored out of his royal mind.

Surrounded by endless feasts of questionable meats, stale bread, and dishes that looked suspiciously like cat food, the mighty king has just one simple demand: Invent a snack that’s salty, sour, crunchy, and unlike anything the world has ever tasted.

Failure means death.

Unfortunately, the assignment falls to his long-suffering royal Chef and Randy, his spectacularly dim-witted but fiercely loyal assistant. Armed with an enormous jug, absolutely no plan, and a rapidly diminishing supply of dignity, the unlikely duo sets off across the ancient world in search of the impossible.

What follows is a gloriously disastrous odyssey through hostile kingdoms, deranged gods, dangerous women, mythical monsters, drunken debauchery, and culinary discoveries that probably violate several health codes.

Along the way, they’ll encounter the legendary Gilgamesh, the bull-hating Enkidu, a dangerously seductive goddess, and enough sex, violence, betrayal, and bodily fluids to make the invention of a simple vegetable snack seem like a genuine miracle.

It’s The Odyssey meets Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle—with more gods, fewer pants, and one very important cucumber.

Wildly inappropriate, relentlessly ridiculous, and surprisingly epic, The Invention of the Pickle is the untold story of humanity’s greatest culinary achievement.

History has never been this stupid.

And snacks will never be the same.

About the Author

Ryan Archuleta spent three and a half years repairing tanks in South Korea for the U.S. Army. Somehow, preparing tax returns turned out to be almost as demanding.

A Special Operations veteran, former Deloitte accountant, and lifelong comedy obsessive, Ryan has followed a career path that could generously be described as unconventional. After leaving the military, he traded armored vehicles for spreadsheets before eventually trading spreadsheets for a microphone. Along the way, he launched a premium vending machine business in San Diego to pay the bills while pursuing stand-up comedy.

Raised in Rialto, California, Ryan grew up as a latchkey kid in a Mexican-American household, an experience that continues to shape his comedic voice and perspective. He developed his act the old-fashioned way: grinding through open mics after long workdays, taking whatever stage time he could find, and eventually making comedy his full-time pursuit.

Ryan has headlined at The Ha-Ha, The Laugh Factory, and Santa Monica Playhouse, and performed at The Comedy Store, Flappers Comedy Club, Roast Battle San Diego, Van Nuys Comedy Club, and numerous venues throughout California.

Blending sharp observational humor, an unconventional life story, and a healthy disregard for good taste, Ryan brings the same irreverent sensibility to his writing.

The Invention of the Pickle is his gloriously absurd journey into historical fiction, mythology, and the surprisingly dangerous business of inventing a snack.
